Stage 18
Cutigliano-Pontepetri
This stage is very beautiful and varied, on paths, roads with little traffic and a stretch that preserves an ancient paving and dirt roads, through which you reach one of the most important tourist locations in the area: San Marcello Pistoiese. After this town you take the old railway that has now been recovered for pedestrian access that leads to the villages of Gavinana and Maresca. The first location is famous for the battle in which Francesco Ferrucci died in 1530, to whom a beautiful equestrian statue is dedicated. Today in Gavinana, in the historic Achilli Palae, the Ecomuseum of the Pistoia Mountains is located, which was the first Ecomuseum in Italy. Maresca also remembers a famous episode that occurred during the Roman Republic: Lucio Sergio Catilina, promoter of the famous conspiracy, died here in 62 BC. In the village of Gavinana you also come across a much more recent but little-known curiosity: right on the Via Romea Imperiale you can see a brass plaque that commemorates the agreement with which the signage used on all the paths in Italy was adopted, the white and red one that the volunteers of the CAI (Italian Alpine Club) tirelessly affix to trees and walls to mark the paths.
