Stage 19
Pontepetri-Pistoia
Leaving the village of Pontepetri on the banks of the newborn Reno, we quickly climb to a wooded and rocky ridge from which a panorama opens up that we had been awaiting with some impatience: for the first time, the splendid Tuscan plain is below us, with the city of Pistoia in the foreground, and our thoughts turn to the final destination of our journey. Once we reach the Passo of the Collina, we change our travel companion once again: we say goodbye to the “Cammino of San Bartolomeo” and continue together on the “Via Francesca of the Sambuca”, the road that comes from Bologna. The Cammino of San Bartolomeo continues east to Spedaletto, once the site of a hospice for pilgrims heading to Pistoia. From Collina, the descent to Pistoia begins, along the old road that intersects the hairpin bends of the new car road, among very pleasant olive groves almost to the plain. Pistoia is a real surprise: an important urban planning, with large buildings and beautiful monuments. Here in Pistoia it is important to remember above all the Relic of Saint James, preserved in the Cathedral. The link with the Spanish city is celebrated on February 2nd of each year, when the credentials are delivered to the pilgrims of the area who will go to Santiago de Compostela during the year.
