Stage 11

Sozzigalli-Modena

In this stage we move from the Secchia River to another river, less large, but historically important: the Naviglio, which once connected the center of Modena (the Ducal Palace itself, and was often used by the Este family for various needs). We are in lands rich in world-famous productions: wines (Lambrusco), fashion, motors. After some historical emergencies linked to river navigation, very important until a few decades ago, and historic villas, we arrive at a World Heritage monument. This is the thousand-year-old architectural complex, in Romanesque style, consisting of the Cathedral (work of Lanfranco and Wiligelmo), and the “Ghirlandina” Tower, its soaring bell tower. Everything, starting from the stones, speaks to us of the medieval world, where the Cathedral and the Town Hall still overlook the same square, the place of the market. Here we will meet King Arthur, an extraordinary Genesis in stone, and even the measure of ricotta, all on the walls of the same Church.
